The Energetic Side of Digestive Issues
We all know the gut is important. But what if bloating, constipation, or stomach pain aren’t just about food? What if your digestive symptoms are also a signal that something deeper needs attention?
In my work as a naturopath and energy practitioner, I’ve seen this over and over: the body speaks through symptoms when emotional or energetic stress goes unprocessed.
And nowhere is this more obvious than in the gut.
The gut is more than digestion
Physically, the gut helps you absorb nutrients, eliminate waste, and regulate immune and hormone function. But it’s also home to the enteric nervous system, sometimes called your “second brain.” It is packed with neurotransmitters and deeply connected to your emotional state.
Ever had a “gut feeling”? Butterflies before a big event? That’s not random. Your digestive system responds directly to stress, fear, and emotional overload.
Common energetic patterns I see with gut issues
These are not diagnoses. They are patterns I’ve observed in clients who come in with unresolved digestive complaints, especially when nothing else seems to help long term:
Constipation: Often linked with holding on either emotionally or energetically. People with this pattern may have a hard time letting go of control or past experiences.
Bloating: Can be related to energetic stagnation. Think of it like internal congestion where things aren’t flowing. This often shows up when someone is stuck in a situation that feels heavy or overwhelming.
Acid reflux or burning: Tends to show up in people who are “burning the candle at both ends” or holding onto frustration. There’s usually too much heat in the system.
Irritable bowels: Often tied to anxious energy or overstimulation. The nervous system is on high alert and the gut can’t settle.
These aren’t the only patterns, but they’re common ones I see in women juggling too much, ignoring their own needs, or stuck in a fight-or-flight loop.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective
In TCM, digestion is governed by the Spleen and Stomach systems, which are tied to overthinking and worry. When you dwell on things or mentally spin, it can weaken digestive energy and create symptoms like fatigue, gas, and loose stools.
Liver energy also plays a role. If Liver Qi is stagnant, often from repressed anger, resentment, or chronic stress, it can "attack" the digestive system, leading to cramps, IBS symptoms, and irregular bowel movements.
This energetic framework can give powerful insights when lab work is normal, but symptoms persist.

Of course, nutrition, hydration, and gut-friendly supplements matter. But if you’re only treating the physical side without looking at emotional or energetic blocks, you might get temporary relief without lasting change.
